In 2019, fixed broadband users preferred higher data rate connections

According to the statistical data regarding the evolution of the fixed broadband market in 2019, processed by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), the total number of subscribers who prefer these services increased, compared to 2018, by 7,6%, totaling 670.5 thousand. However, most applicants chose fiber optic connections (FTTx), their number increasing by 14.7%, up to 452.3 thousand, and by coaxial cable, which increased by 20.6%, totaling 53,5 thousand. At the same time, the number of xDSL subscribers decreased by 10.5% down to 163 thousand, subscribers to these services via other technologies decreased by 28% down to 1.7 thousand. The penetration rate of these services, per 100 inhabitants, increased in one year by 2.2 percentage points, reaching 25%.

According to the same data, in 2019 the number of subscribers to high data transfer speeds connections of over 100 Mbps, increased by 64.4%, estimated about 103 thousand, while the number of subscribers to connections between 30-100 Mbps increased by 9.2% and reached over 370 thousand. At the same time, the number of subscribers to connections of 10-30 Mbps speeds decreased by 10.1%, estimated at about a total of 175 thousand, connections of 2-10 Mbps decreased by 7.9%, making 7.7 thousand, and connections of up to 2 Mbps decreased by 20.6%, to a total of 14.9 thousand.

Statistical data presented by ANRCETI by the 97 providers in operation on the fixed broadband market show that the sales made on this market segment increased, compared to 2018, by 5.7%, estimated at 1 billion 361,7 million lei. The most significant increase, of 56.3%, was reported by Orange Moldova, an increase of 8.6% - by StarNet company and an increase of 3.6% - by Moldtelecom. At the same time, the cumulative sales of the other suppliers on this market decreased by 4.9%. Following this evolution, the average monthly revenue per subscriber (ARPU) for these services decreased by 1.6% and was estimated at 176.1 lei.

The average market shares of the largest fixed broadband providers, according to the revenues registered in 2019, were the following: Moldtelecom - 62.6%, StarNet - 21.5%, Orange Moldova - 5.6%. The average market share of the other suppliers was 10.3%.
