NUMBER OF FIXED FIBER INTERNET CONNECTIONS INCREASED IN 2020

Statistical data on the evolution of the fixed broadband access market in 2020, presented to the National Regulatory Agency for Regulation in Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) show that the number of applicants for fixed Internet access services enabling very high transfer speeds data (over 100 Mbps) increased by 62.7% compared to 2019, and reached over 167 thousand consumers, while the number of customers of fixed Internet access services at speeds between 30-100 Mbps increased by 3.6% and made 383.2 thousand. At the same time, the total number of subscribers increased by 7.2% and reached 719 thousand. The penetration rate of fixed broadband Internet access services, per 100 inhabitants, increased by 2.2 pp. and was estimated at 27.2%.

According to the data presented by the 111 fixed Internet providers, the number of those who requested connections via fiber (FTTx) increased by 15.1%, reaching about 519.8 thousand, making up a share of 72.3% of the total number of subscribers, the number of coaxial cable connections increased by 9.1%, totaling just over 59 thousand, and connections through other technologies was over 2 thousand, increasing by 21.2 %. At the same time, the number of subscribers who requested connections via xDSL technology decreased by 15.2%, reaching 138.1 thousand.

The revenues obtained in 2020, from the sale of fixed broadband Internet services increased, compared to 2019, by 1.6% and amounted to about 1.4 billion lei. The average monthly income per subscriber (ARPU) for the respective services decreased by 5.4% and amounted to 166.6 lei.

The market shares of the largest providers of fixed broadband access services, depending on revenues, were as follows: Moldtelecom - 61.1%, Starnet Solutii - 21%, Orange Moldova - 7.5%. The cumulative market share of the other suppliers was 10.4%.
