Fixed-Line High-Speed Internet Access Market Recorded Increases in the First Three Months of 2018

In the timeframe January - March 2018, the market for Internet access services at fixed locations continued to increase both in terms of number of subscribers and revenues. The statistical data, aggregated by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), show that during this period the number of subscribers to these services increased by over 6 thousand (+1%) and reached 590,4 thousand, the total revenues on this market segment increased by 17,3 million lei (+5,8%) and exceeded 315 million lei.

However, the revenues from the same services of Sun Communications dropped 12,8%, to a total of 13,5 million lei, while the cumulative revenues of the other 72 providers increased by 13,2% to over 31,7 million lei. As a result of this evolution, the average monthly revenue (ARPU) per fixed Internet subscriber increased by 1% and was equal to about 178,8 lei.

The increase of revenues on this market segment is due to the increase in the number of subscribers to high speed fixed Internet access services. Thus, the number of subscribers connected via fiber (FTTx - Fiber to the premises) increased in three months by 8,4 thousand (+2,4%) and reached about 356,1 thousand. At the same time, the number of subscribers connected via coaxial cable increased by 314 (+0,8%) to about 42,thousand; the number of xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) subscribers dropped by 2,7 thousand (-1,4%), to 189,9 thousand.

As a result of the fixed broadband evolution, at the end of the first quarter of 2018, the providers had the following market shares, by turnover: Moldtelecom – 64,2%, StarNet Solutions – 21,4%, Sun Communications – 4,3%, the cumulative market share of the other suppliers was 10,1%.
