The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is willing to assist the R. Moldova for the implementation of telephone number portability, the transition from analogue to digital television, for other projects related to communications and information technology development.
It was the message conveyed by the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of ITU, Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid, at a meeting on Tuesday, August 17, with Sergiu Sitnic, Director of the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI). The BDT Director visited the Agency within his first working visit in R. Moldova, on August 15-18.
The guest was informed about the main activities and objectives of the regulator, the challenges it faces. ANRCETI Director, Sergiu Sitnic, said that the No 1 priority of the Agency is to create conditions for fair competition on the markets for electronic communications, adding that now the regulator is concerned with the analysis and identification of relevant markets, designation of providers with significant market power on these markets and establishing special preventive obligations to be imposed on such providers. He indicated that the Agency intends to complete this work by the end of this year.
ANRCETI Director highly appreciated the current state of collaboration relations between ANRCETI and the International Telecommunications Union and its structures, stressing that the assistance provided by the ITU is helpful for the Agency. However, Sergiu Sitnic said that the Moldovan side needs assistance for the transition to digital television, implementation of number portability.
In his turn, Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid said that ITU is ready to provide proper assistance, stressing that the institution has the experience and best practices for the implementation of the nominated projects. He expressed his satisfaction with the Agency's collaboration with ITU’s profile structures and its active participation in forums held by the Union. On this occasion, the guest invited ANRCETI representatives to participate in the Global Symposium of Regulators (GSR10) which will be organized by ITU on November 9-12, 2010 in Dakar, Senegal.
The International Telecommunications Union is a United Nations specialized agency that promotes communications development and standardization. It comprises 191 countries, more than 700 communications companies, standard-developing organizations and financial institutions. R. Moldova became a full member of the ITU in October 1992.
