In 2016, the number of 4G mobile users increased over 2015, by 184,1% up to 376,9 thousand , of which 319,1 thousand (up 184,6%) accessed the global network via smartphones and over 57, 8 thousand (up 181,1%) - via modems/cards/USB (dedicated access). During this period, the number of mobile 3G users increased by 14,6% to over 1,59 million. These are statistical data on mobile broadband market in 2016, processed by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI).
According to data presented to ANRCETI by the three mobile networks and service providers (Orange Moldova, Moldcell and Moldtelecom - Unite), last year the total number of mobile broadband users (3G, 4G and dedicated access, technologies providing increased net navigation speeds) increased by 30% and equaled over 1 million. 893,5 thousand. Following this development, the mobile broadband penetration rate per 100 inhabitants increased by 12,3 percentage points (p.p.) up to 53,3%.
During this period, the total mobile broadband traffic increased over 2015 by 16,5% up to 45,5 million GB. About 10,25 million GB of this traffic was generated by smartphone users and 35,25 million GB – by dedicated Internet users. A user who accessed the Internet from a smartphone traffic generated on average about 560 MB per month, up by 56% compared to 2015, while a dedicated Internet user – 9,8 GB monthly traffic, up 4,6%.
The data aggregated by ANRCETI show that the total mobile broadband revenues increased over 2015 by 23,1% up to 713,18 million lei. This is due to higher of revenues for all three mobile providers. Revenues of Moldcell increased by 37,2% up to 195,49 million lei, Orange Moldova - by 22,6% up to 419,84 million lei and Moldtelecom – by 3,9 % up to 97,85 million lei. Consequently, the average monthly revenue (ARPU) per dedicated mobile Internet user was 77,2 lei and ARPU for revenue per mobile broadband user - 24 lei.
According to ANRCETI estimations at the end of 2016, the three mobile broadband providers had the following market shares by revenues from those services: Orange Moldova – 58,9%, Moldcell - 27,3% and Moldtelecom – 13,8%.
The 3G services were launched in autumn 2008 and the 4G services - in November 2012. The 3G mobile networks provide data transfer speeds up to 42 Mbps and the 4G networks - speeds up to 300 Mbps. At the end of 2016, the 4G coverage of Moldova’s territory reached 97%.
