Pay TV Market Indicators in Regress in First Half Year 2018

Statistical data on the evolution of the pay TV market (cable and IPTV), aggregated by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) in the first half of 2018, show that the main indicators of this market have declined. Thus, the number of pay TV subscribers dropped by 5,8 thousand (-1,8%), compared to the end of 2017 and totaled 317,9 thousand, and the revenues from these services decreased by 1,9 million lei (-2,3%) to a total of 78 million 704,7 thousand lei.

The drop of the total number of pay TV subscribers was caused by the decrease of subscriber base of cable network operators by 17,9 thousand (-9,7%) in six months, down to 166,3 thousand. At the same time, the number of subscribers to IPTV networks increased by 12,2 thousand (+8,7%) and totaled 151,7 thousand. As a result of this evolution, the pay TV penetration rate per 100 inhabitants decreased by 0,2 percentage points and constituted 9%.

According to the data provided to ANRCETI by the active providers of pay TV services, in the six months of 2018, 52,3% of the total number of subscribers used IPTV networks and 47,7% - cable networks. The same data show that 60,9% of subscribers have access to the digital TV and 39,1% - to analogue TV.

The total revenue from pay TV services decreased as a result of the drop in sales by both cable and IPTV providers. The turnover of cable network providers decreased by 1,8 million lei (-4,1%), compared to 2017, down to a total of 41 million 504,7 thousand lei, while the turnover of IPTV network providers decreased by 67,3 thousand lei, down to a total of 37,2 million lei. As a result of this evolution, the average monthly income per pay TV subscriber (ARPU) decreased by 6 lei (-13%) and constituted 40,4 lei.
