Increasing Demand for Fixed Broadband Services

In the first half of 2018, the fixed broadband market continued to grow. Thus, the total number of subscribers to these services increased by 2,4% over the 6-month period, reaching over 598 thousand, and the volume of revenues from these services increased by 6,3% and reached more than 636,5 million lei. As a result of this evolution, the average monthly revenue per subscriber (ARPU) for these services increased by 1,4% and became 180 lei.

The statistical data on the evolution of the fixed broadband market, aggregated by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), show that the number of fixed broadband subscribers went up to 365,8 thousand, due to 5,2% increase of subscribers contracting FTTx (Fiber to the premises). The number of subscribers connected via xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies decreased by 2,5%, to 188 thousand, and subscribers connected via Coaxial Cable Connections (DOCSIS) dropped by 1,4% to about 41 thousand. As a result, the penetration rate of fixed Internet access services per 100 inhabitants of the country increased by 0,4 percentage points and reached 16,8%.

The analysis of fixed Internet connections in terms of data transfer rates shows that in the first half of 2018, the number of connections ranging 30 Mbps to 100 Mbps grew most of all, the number of such subscribers reaching 308,8 thousand (+13,5 thousand or 4,6%) in the six months of 2018.

The number of subscribers to connections above 100 Mbps increased by 9,2 thousand (+23,1%) up to 49,2 thousand, the number of subscribers to connections between 10 and 30 Mbps increased by 3,7 thousand (+2%) and totaled 193,7 thousand.

ANRCETI specialists explain the constant demand for fixed Internet access services by the investments in this sector, which enable end-users to access better services and which in their turn allow using Internet resources such as social platforms, video content, etc., more efficiently.
