Mobile telephony strengthens market position

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

The turnover in mobile sector increased, in the first semester of this year, as compared to the same period of time last year, by 27,49% and reached 1 billion 375,7 million lei, whereas sales in fixed telephony reduced by 1,57% and came up to 1 billion 114,9 thousand lei. The data are provided by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI).

The data show that in the given timeframe, for the first time in the recent years, the fixed telephone yielded most of its positions to mobile. Thus, in the first semester, the number of mobile users increased, compared to the same timeframe of last year, by 42,55% and exceeded 2 million 169,9 thousand. The number of fixed telephony subscribers increased by 4,47% and constituted 1 million 87,3 thousand. In the first half of the year, mobile operators connected to their networks about 287,1 thousand subscribers, whereas fixed telephony operators - 7,43 thousand. The Average Revenue per User (ARPU) in mobile sector declined by 12,2% and came down to 114,82 lei, whereas in the fixed sector the decline was 9,3% and equaled to 166,27 lei.

As a result of this development, the mobile penetration rate per 100 population raised from 54,98% to 63,37%, while the fixed penetration rate from 31,53% to 31,75%.

The experts of the Agency account for the decline in fixed pace of growth by two factors basic: approach of the given market to the state of saturation and lack of efficient competition on this market segment caused by unbalanced tariffs applied by the incumbent JSC MOLDTELECOM. However, the Agency considers the positive development of the mobile telephony sector a natural result of the competition in this sector, which makes itself felt through reduction of tariffs and traffic increase when operators launch new offers for the users. This factor enhanced the migration of a significant part of traffic from fixed to mobile networks, a tendency which in 2008 made itself strongly felt.

As the Agency estimates, due to this tendency, the mobile market is going to grow rapidly and will reach 70% penetration rate by the end of this year.

In the first semester of the year, the first GSM operator in Moldova - Orange Moldova - had the most significant mobile market share in terms of sales, - 66,29%. The incumbent JSC highest MOLDTELECOM is the holder of the highest share of the fixed market - 96,44%.
