MOBILE BROADBAND SERVICES VIA SMARTPHONE INCREASINGLY IN DEMAND IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2022

The statistical data on the evolution of the mobile broadband market, aggregated by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), show that the market has grown dynamically in the first quarter of this year. Thus, the number of users who accessing the Internet through smartphones increased by 3.5%, compared to the end of 2021, and totaled over 2.6 million, and the traffic they generated increased by 58.3%, compared to the same period last year, and reached 42.2 million GB.

At the same time, the total number of users who accessed mobile Internet (via smartphone and data-only access) increased by 2.8%, and reached about 2.8 million, the number of those who accessed the data-only Internet decreased by 9.2% and totaled 133.4 thousand, and the number of those who contracted M2M services increased by 3.1%, up to 53.7 thousand. As a result of this evolution, the penetration rate of broadband Internet services increased by 3.8 pp, and reached 106.2%.

The same data show that the total volume of mobile broadband traffic increased by 30.3% and was estimated at over 58.1 million GB, compared to the same quarter last year, and the volume of data-only mobile broadband traffic decreased by 11.3% and amounted to over 15.9 million GB. The average monthly traffic per mobile broadband user via smartphone increased by 34% compared to the first quarter of 2021, and was 5.4 GB, and the data-only mobile Internet increased by 19.5% and made 37.9 GB.

During the reference period, the total volume of revenues from mobile broadband access services increased by 5.2%, compared to the same period last year, and equaled to over 319.8 million lei. The average monthly revenue per user of dedicated mobile broadband increased by 10% up to 103.7 lei, and that of Internet access via smartphone decreased by 6.7% and made 35.6 lei.

The market shares, by turnover, of the three mobile broadband service providers were the following: Orange Moldova - 59.6%, Moldcell - 35.2% and Moldtelecom - of 5.2%.
