HIGH-SPEED FIXED BROADBAND CONNECTIONS INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THIS YEAR

In the first three months of this year, the number of fixed broadband connections, enabling over 100 Mbps speeds, increased by 13.3% compared to the end of 2020, and was estimated at about 190 thousand, whereas connections of less than 100 Mbps were in decline, according to statistical data aggregated by the National Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI).

The total number of subscribers to fixed broadband services increased, in three months, by 1.1%, and reached about 727 thousand, of which 539.2 thousand (increased by 3.7%) are fiber connections (FTTX), 127.1 thousand (down by 8%) are xDSL connections, 58.4 thousand (down by 1.1%) are coaxial cable connections, and 2.2 thousand (up by 9.2%) represented connections via other technologies.

At the end of March 2021, the most important shares in the total number of subscribers were as follows: via FTTx technologies - 74.2%, via xDSL - 17.5%, via coaxial cable - 8% and other technologies - 0.3%. The penetration rate of fixed broadband services, per 100 inhabitants, increased by 0.3 percentage points and reached 27.5%.

According to the data presented to ANRCETI by the providers of fixed broadband services, the revenues obtained in the first quarter of 2021 from increased, compared to the first quarter of last year, by 6.7% and reached over 364 million lei. As a result of this evolution, the average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) for these services decreased, compared to the similar period of last year, by 0.5% and made up 167.9 lei.

The market shares of the largest fixed broadband providers by revenue, were as follows: Moldtelecom - 60.5%, Starnet Solutii - 20.4% and Orange Moldova - 8.5% . The cumulative market share of the other providers was 10.6%.
